My mother's best friend when living in Mexico died of leukemia age 17.
She loved drawing these Mexican-inspired felt-tip pen design, and the one pictured left was her last, created in hospital. Too delicate to have out, and completely faded all the same, save a rim around the edge protected for years beneath the edge of its frame, it stayed out of sight, and thought.
After a trip to a Mexican art exhibit full of Diego Rivera's works, embroidery, and other such things, I decided to turn the design into something big and bright — restoring the original colours from the salvaged rim — which my mother could keep out.
